We left Tok on Wednesday morning and drove to Jade City - pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I’m sure some of you remember Dave’s and my adventure at Gold Point ghost town on our way back from Death Valley a couple years ago. We had booked a cabin and when we got there discovered we didn’t have running water or a bathroom. Yep, pretty much the same situation here except it was a single wide trailer. Oh well, it was just one night and the bathroom was only about 50 feet away! Left Jade City on Thursday and went to Stewart, BC and checked into the Historic Bayview Hotel. Yes, we had a bathroom but the hotel was built in 1925, no elevator and we were on the second floor. The building had settled so much over the years that walking from the bedroom through the kitchen area felt like being on board a ship. We stayed for two days because the scenery was breathtaking, we were on an estuary off the Portland Canal, and were just next door to Hyder, Alaska which had spectacular glaciers. This morning we drove to New Hazelton, BC and stopped at the visitor center. We’ve discovered that if you want to know anything about what to do or where to go in a new town, that’s the place to find out. We were told about a short hike to a lovely waterfall so went there and since we were running out of clean clothes, also hung out at the laundromat for awhile. (Did you know Canadian ones are coins and called Loonies?) Anyway, we saw a flyer on the bulletin board for a bistro about a half hour away, made reservations and had a great dinner. And we FINALLY saw a bear! (Dave saw one this morning but I had my eyes shut for a few minutes so I’m choosing not to count that one.) We’re staying at a reasonably nice place tonite (i.e., running water) and be off to Prince George in the morning.
